Mark a Hanukkah menorah "safe boundary" with tape
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 12:23pm
This year, Hanukkah starts on the evening of December 11. Here's Anna's wise menorah safety hack: My kids are almost 6, almost 3, and just 1. We involve the older kids in lighting their own menorahs, picking out the candles, helping with the actual lighting, etc. But, there is a lot of time spent saying afterwards, "don't go near the candles!" I considered gating up the ro[...]

The Melissa & Doug Recall: An open letter to Doug Bernstein
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 12:06pm
After publishing our piece on the Canadian recall of Melissa & Doug toys for violating a barium standard that mirrors the limit levels in force in the U.S. (1,000 ppm) we received an email from reader and blogger Candace which included a personal email address for Doug Bernstein, President of Melissa & Doug. We noted in our previous post that we had contacted the owners by email and attemp[...]

DT Friday Freakout: Mall Santa Edition
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 12:05pm
Even though a trip to any mall is enough to ruin your weekend, we'll expand the reach of the Freakout a bit, just to make sure: While the terrorist elf who threatened to blow up Mall Santa in Georgia has been arrested, he may have accomplices. So until the Fat Man gives the all clear, we should consider anyone in an elf suit a suspect. Help us, Rush Limbaugh, you're our only hope! [w[...]

Worried About Your Kids Sexting?
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 11:57am
You'd think that with all of the conversations and warnings going on about sexting, that kids would be less likely to do it and parents would be more aware of what they are doing. (read Sexting: Harmful or Harmless?) Still, Sexting numbers have gone through the roof.

Mom Confessions: I Put My Child to Bed Late So She Wakes Up Late
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 11:40am
It's time for a Mom Confession -- because, let's face it, we're real mothers and sometimes it doesn't work the way the parenting books say it should. This Week's Confession: I don't put my toddler to bed until around midnight so that she sleeps later in the morning. I get more housework done that way. — anonymous See this poll at CafeMom. Fever and the Unexpected Snow
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 11:00am
While we were in Disney, my daughter, Captain Obvious, came down with a fever. She had no other symptoms except she was cold. She eventually became tired and lethargic from it, so we took her back to the hotel instead of her feasting on pizza at CiCis. Within a day she was perfectly fine again, liquid ibuprofen went to work so she was still able to enjoy her vacation. On Saturday, Super M came down[...]

Enough With the Whining About Kids on Planes
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 10:12am
Everyone loves to knock airline travel. The bland (or non-existent) food, lack of legroom, lost luggage and security hassles are all ripe joke fodder, but there’s one subject that generates more punch than punchline. Kids on a plane. This topic has been in the hot seat yet again due to the recent headlines about Southwest Airlines [...]

Taking baby’s temperature
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 09:22am
A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post called, You can’t call-in sick when you’re a mom. Well wouldn’t you know it, I inevitably gave my daughter her first cold. That night she woke at 1am hysterically crying. I went into her room and as soon as I picked her up I knew she had a fever. She was hot to the touch. I got the thermometer out and took her temperature. Sure enough, it was [...]

Actually, The Sun Is NOT A Mass Of Incandescent Gas
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 07:37am
Things were all so simple then, in April, when I brushed aside They Might Be Giants' energetic 1993 cover version of, "The sun is a mass of incandescent gas." The song was written by Hy Zaret in 1950, for Space Songs, part of the "Ballads for the Age of Science" series. Well, the 1950 theory of state of the sun turns out to be wrong, and on their new CD, Here Comes Scie[...]

Some Hospitals Now Offer Breastfeeding Gift Bags
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 07:31am
Healthy Baby Bounty Bag My thoughts have been with Cafe MicheleZ, who just had twins two days ago! I wonder how she's doing ... probably wonderful and crazy and sleepless all at the same time. It's called me back to my own hospital stays, all the flowers and gifts, and how wonderful it was to finally go home with my babies. The nurses told me I couldn't keep the receiving blanket ([...]

Your Man's Cleavage: Making a Style Comeback?
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 07:00am
If we're to believe the looks on the fall fashion runways and this article "More Men Have Something They Want to Get Off Their Chests -- Their Shirts" in the Wall Street Journal, we may be seeing a lot more man chest in 2010. Happy or sad?Man cleavage and plunging necklines — I suppose I won't mind as long as there are no gold chains or crazy hair patches involved. And, y[...]

Home for the holidays. Or not.
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 07:59am
According to the calendar, this is the year to spend Christmas at my parent's place. According to the airlines, however, this is the year to stay home. Over the past month, I've looked at hundreds of flights out of more than a half-dozen Midwest airports into three different hubs near my folks. The cost: astronomical, times four. Sometime in the next week, I'll bite the bullet and b[...]
